There have been reports over the last couple of days that Ajax have targeted Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny as a possible replacement for Manchester United linked Jasper Cillessen, according to the Mail.
With such good links between the Amsterdam outfit and the Gunners, former Arsenal stars Marc Overmars and Dennis Bergkamp are prominent figures at the Dutch giants, Ajax are looking to the Emirates as they prepare for a big money bid for their goalkeeper from Louis van Gaal. There is uncertainty at Old Trafford between the sticks, with David De Gea less likely to move but still a target for Real Madrid, and Victor Valdes certain to leave after falling out with the club.
Having worked with Cillessen as Netherlands manager, Van Gaal is confident the 27-year-old could do a job at United, whether he becomes first choice this season or the next when De Gea's contract expires.
Ajax, who have already brought in Yaya Sanogo on loan from Arsenal this summer, are therefore making contingency plans, and that includes Poland international Szczesny say the Mail, who may find himself third choice at the Gunners, considering Petr Cech's arrival and the presence of World Cup and Copa America star David Ospina.
The goalkeeper dilemma at the Emirates
There doesn't seem to be much doubt that Cech, the man that has been brought in from Chelsea in one of the summer's most high profile moves, is set to be number one for the Gunners next season, but that still leaves big questions about how Arsene Wenger will manage his other senior goalkeepers.
The Czech international is one of the top goalkeeping stars in the world, but in Szczesny, Arsenal also have an experienced stopper who is just 25-years-old, and with a couple of minor tweaks, still fully capable of becoming one of the best around in the coming years. Of course, the Pole needs to be getting regular football to progress, and through Arsene Wenger may be able to keep one of his two back-up goalkeepers happy with cup appearances, it is unlikely there are enough games to go round for three internationals.
The Frenchman will then have to make a decision this summer whether keep the player he has had in his squad for several years now in Szczesny, or last season's number one David Ospina - a decision that could rely on whether a club like Ajax, come in for either player.
