Newcastle United plan to fly Anderlecht defender Chancel Mbemba in for his medical later this week as they look to wrap up his signing, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the Premier League club.
The Magpies have just finalised the recruitment of Aleksandar Mitrovic from the Belgian giants, but at the same time they have been concluding talks over DR Congo international defender Mbemba.
There have been some question marks over whether the 20-year-old would meet work permit regulations as he does not yet possess Belgian citizenship, but Newcastle chiefs are confident that he will meet the criteria.
"He is a very good young player and if a deal can be done it would be a great signing, and one which has come under the radar," a club source told HITC Sport.
Mbemba can play in central defence or at full-back, and Newcastle talent spotter Graham Carr is very keen to land his services to bolster their ranks.
Newcastle want Mbemba signed in time to link up with the rest of the Magpies squad when they return from their pre-season tour of America.
