Former Tottenham player Lewis Holtby responds to suggestions he is not an effective number 10

After leaving Tottenham Hotspur this summer, the German midfielder will be looking to improve on his record during a recent loan spell.

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lewis Holtby has been speaking to Bild following his permanent move to Hamburg this summer.

The 24-year-old spent last season on loan in the Bundesliga and as was widely expected he left Tottenham for good at the end of the campaign. But after a disappointing spell during which he failed to score and provided only two assists in 28 appearances, Holtby has responded to calls he is not an effective number 10.

“I have played well at 10,” Holtby told Bild. “In the centre my game has a stronger advantage. I can see myself playing games at 10, eight or six in midfield but I would rather not play on the wings.”

That was a position the former Tottenham man found himself in on a few occasions last season, playing three times on the left and twice on the right in the league. But it is clear the player who turned out just 42 times for Spurs has faith in his ability.

Some Tottenham fans would have liked Holtby to stay at White Hart Lane and get more chances under manager Mauricio Pochettino, but alas the player is now back in his homeland and he will no doubt be aiming to prove the naysayers wrong when the action kicks off once more.

He has scored at every other club he has played for to date and has set up plenty more goals besides, but with Hamburg scrapping away near the bottom of the table he showed only brief glimpses of what he is capable of.
