Raheem Sterling scored just three minutes into his Manchester City debut, but Don Hutchinson was not impressed.
Sterling's name was trending on Twitter after his goal against Italian side AS Roma.
Former Liverpool midfielder Hutchinson, who played for the Reds between 1990 and 1994, called for calm regarding the winger's immediate impact.
Wow R Sterling is now the best player in the world!!!! He has scored a goal in a pre-season friendly— Don Hutchison (@donhutch4) July 21, 2015
Manchester City signed Sterling for £49 million earlier this month, a club record deal, and the pressure on the young winger this coming season is likely to be huge.
Even despite Hutchinson's view, the England attacker could not have hoped for a better start, and it is a positive early sign that he will be willing to embrace the responsibility of leading the attack at his new club.
As for over reacting to pre-season performances, Hutchinson and former Reds midfielder Didi Hamann appear to be signing from different hymn sheets, with the latter raving about teenager Jordon Ibe's display against Adelaide United just 24 hours earlier.
Ibe is a special talent. He's got every attribute an offensive player needs. A player England lacked in last 20 years.— Didi Hamann (@DietmarHamann) July 20, 2015
