Newcastle completed the signing of Aleksandar Mitrovic on Tuesday.
If Mitrovic manages to emulate the feats of Shearer, it will not take long before the youngster is adored as St James’ Park.
The Magpies are in serious need of a consistent goalscorer, with Papiss Cisse’s influence waning at the club, and Mitrovic, 20, has been signed to fix this problem.
He scored an impressive 43 goals in 89 games for Anderlecht, and looks to have the build of a classic number nine about him. He is considered a player who will become a fan favourite on Tyneside, with a never-say-die attitude and desire to always improve that could see him become a star.
However, he has never been tested in a top quality league, and there are no guarantees his goals will continue to flow when making the step up to the Premier League.
Clearly the Newcastle hierarchy do believe Mitrovic has the quality to make it in the top flight, and Shearer himself wants to see the young striker having fun at St James’ Park, and wowing the crowds in the same style that he did.
If Mitrovic makes even half the impact that Shearer did, he will be considered a fantastic signing, and Newcastle’s years of woe may come closer to ending.
