Two French sides reportedly interested in Newcastle midfielder Mehdi Abeid

Could the young Algerian leave Newcastle United permanently this summer?

According to a report from French publication L’Equipe, two French sides are interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Mehdi Abeid this summer.

The 22-year-old has just one year left on his current contract at St James’ Park and the report claims that both Lille and Montpellier have contacted the Magpies regarding the Algerian international.

Abeid was born in France and trained at Lens’ academy before moving to Newcastle in 2011. Since then he has enjoyed loan spells at St Johnstone and Panathinaikos with the latter move proving particularly fruitful, with the player managing an impressive 10 goals and six assists in 38 matches.

Abeid has gone on to feature 21 times for Newcastle’s senior side to date but injuries took their toll last season and he managed only 16 games in all competitions.

With the risk of losing the player for nothing in just 12 months, Newcastle may feel the time is right to allow him to move back to the country of his birth. But if new manager Steve McClaren sees a future for him he could resist all offers and ultimately convince the Magpies’ hierarchy to offer Abeid a new deal.
