Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier picked out two first team defenders he’s been impressed by during a quick-fire question and answer session, covered on the club’s official Facebook page and official Twitter feed.
The defence is going to be a vital part of the side over the next ten months, as the club looks to get closer to the top four, which would mean qualification into the Champions League for next season.
Dier revealed that right-back Kyle Walker is the best in the entire squad in terms of his running ability, while suggesting that under pressure defender Federico Fazio is the best equipped to deal with the physical nature of the Premier League.
“Who’s the best runner? “Kyle Walker”, Who’s the strongest in the gym? “Fazio”” revealed Dier.
The importance of Kyle Walker
Walker is a player who divides opinion because he’s a gutsy and honest defender who puts everything on the line when he plays.
He gets forward and he takes risks, relying on his speed to drop back into position when Tottenham lose possession higher up the pitch.
He will start the season as the club’s number one right-back, which means a real challenge for new signing Kieran Trippier in terms of forcing his way into the side on a regular basis.
Fazio under pressure
Fazio is under pressure because Pochettino has already improved his centre back options this summer in the form of Kevin Wimmer and Toby Alderweireld.
If Fazio doesn’t want to leave the club, he’s facing a real fight to try and get game time once the season gets underway in just over two weeks.
He can create an advantage for himself through that hard work in the gym and in training, to plant that seed in the mind of the manager which will hopefully grow and work in his favour.
