Sherwood encouraged by the pre-season impact of Gabby Agbonlahor

Gabriel Agbonlahor

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood is hopeful Gabby Agbonlahor can improve on his goal tally from last season.

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has explained on the club’s official website that Gabby Agbonlahor is working extremely hard to be ready for the new season.

Agbonlahor is going to be a vital player for Villa next season after the exit of midfielder Fabian Delph and if Christian Benteke completes a move to Liverpool.

Sherwood is confident that he can have a big season, suggesting that the player has a big responsibility to the team in terms of the goals he scores for the side.

“Gabby is looking really sharp. It's good for him to get a pre-season at a really high intensity like I want,” Sherwood told avfc.co.uk.

“He is shredding weight and why shouldn't he have the best season he's ever had?”

“He's no age. 28. If we can get him fit then he can offer that real threat in behind people with energy - We only scored 31 and Gabby's six were vital for us.”

What Sherwood needs to see from Agbonlahor

It’s important that the player shows his manager that he’s not suffering personally from key players leaving the football club.

He needs to show the boss that he’s ready to put his hand up and be counted, with the aim of getting the team off to a very positive start in the Premier League.

Agbonlahor is a senior player in the team and someone who can help Sherwood by taking a little bit of the pressure away from him.

Where does Sherwood use his key player?

It will be tempting for Sherwood to slot Agbonlahor into the main centre forward role should Benteke leave, which makes sense because he’s got the pace to keep any defence on the back foot.

However, Sherwood will be working hard to bring in another striker, which would mean Agbonlahor may be better utilised in a wide area.
