Bundesliga club could land Xherdan Shaqiri with La Gazetta Dello Sport claiming the Inter Milan man will replace the outgoing Jefferson Farfan.
Stoke City’s reported attempt to lure Xherdan Shaqiri to the Britannia Stadium looks set to end in failure.
A report carried by La Gazetta Dello Sport suggests the Inter Milan star is heading to Germany with Schalke.
The Switzerland World Cup star has been deemed surplus to requirements at the San Siro, with Roberto Mancini looking to cash-in on the former Bayern Munich man.
And a move back to the Bundesliga could suit all parties concerned, with Schalke able to offer Shaqiri the chance to play Champions League football next season.
The Gazetta is now claiming that the move looks more than likely to get the go-ahead after the Royal Blues agreed a deal to seel Jefferson Farfan to Al-Jazira in the Middle East.
That deal will clear the way for Shaqiri to join up with Schalke by both freeing up transfer funds and a place in the Gelsenkirchen side’s squad.
One of the standout performers at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Shaqiri netted a hat trick against Honduras to help his national team progress to the knockout phase of the tournament.
They were then beaten by eventual finalists Argentina, with Angel Di Maria scoring the only goal of the game deep into extra time.
