A round-up of the latest news at St James's Park, with the club on the cusp of announcing a major attacking signing.
Newcastle United appear to be edging increasingly close to announcing the signing of Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic from Anderlecht, after a picture emerged on Twitter of the 20-year-old wearing the Magpies shirt as he checked into what appeared to be the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead, with the Chronicle also covering the incident.
It is likely that Mitrovic had just arrived from the club where he may have been involved in some photos to be released to the press once the deal is officially completed.
With it looking likely that Newcastle and their boss Steve McClaren have completed their long awaited attacking reinforcement, the club's fans should be delighted to be signing a player that scored 28 goals in 51 games last season, an astonishing amount for someone so young.
In other news, the Magpies are said to considering adding another Dutchman to the squad as London 24 say they, as well as Leicester and Aston Villa, are chasing Chelsea's young defender Nathan Ake on loan.
The 20-year-old, who can also play in midfield, has long been a star of the Blues' youth teams, as well as getting minutes for the first team occasionally, and after he was left out of the Blues' squad for the tour of North America, he may well be available to a Premier League side that wish to give him better access to first team football.
Finally, longstanding Newcastle defender Steven Taylor is edging closer to a return to the first team as he recovers from an achilles injury he sustained at the start of the year. The 29-year-old made his comeback against Sacramento Republic, playing 45 minutes for a manager who once called the centre back up for the England national team.
“It’s been a long, long six months, but the hard work has paid off, and it was nice to get that 45 minutes,” Taylor is quoted as saying in the Shields Gazette.
“For me, on a personal note, I was absolutely delighted."
