Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke City were three Premier League clubs hot on the trail of Ukraine star, Yevhen Konoplyanka, but after his signing for Sevilla was announced three weeks ago, he was finally presented before the media on Monday, at the Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium.
Given he was one of the most highly sought-after players in the summer transfer market, one of the first questions posed to the 25-year-old was regarding why he chose Sevilla.
Via the official Sevilla website, Konoplyanka responded with certainty: "I like their style of play, the manager, the team." He then added with gratitude: "I want to thank my new team-mates for their welcome. From the very first moment they've received me with arms wide open and I feel at home here."
Although he's seen as a stellar signing for Sevilla, the winger insisted: "I'm no better than anyone else, because every player in the team has their value. I've joined a family, we're a team and when we win a title, it will be because of the whole team."
There's also the conviction from Konoplyanka that Sevilla can achieve great things, suggesting: "I'm very happy to be here, we have a good team and the next title could be the Champions League. In La Liga there are two very strong teams - Real Madrid and Barcelona - but Sevilla can beat them."
Having rejected offers from notable Premier League clubs, Konoplyanka was asked for his thoughts about the strength of La Liga. In his view: "The Premier League is very interesting, but the Spanish league is much stronger and continentally, the Spanish teams compete the best."
It's that dominance on the European stage, highlighted by Sevilla winning back to back Europa League titles, plus consecutive Spanish victories in the Champions League from Real Madrid and Barcelona, which prompted Konoplyanka to point out: "There are always Spanish teams in the European finals and rarely these days, are the English teams getting there."
Now focusing on proving why Sevilla were right to remain patient, before eventually securing his signing, Konoplyanka concluded: "It's not going to be easy to guarantee my place in this team. It will be difficult getting games and convincing the manager, given that the level of quality in this squad is very high."
