Clement suggests the key with any more Derby signings this summer

Derby County Away Flag

Derby County boss Paul Clement has explained any further new arrivals have to take the side forwards.

Derby County boss Paul Clement has told the Derby Telegraph that he’s still on the hunt for a new centre back before the start of the season.

The Rams manager has already made some impressive signings in the transfer window and is set to be tested all over again, following Raul Albentosa’s imminent loan exit to Spanish side Malaga.

It’s a deal, which will leave Clement with a hold to fill in his squad and one which is going to test him further in terms of his negotiation and persuasion skills.

“We are still trying to do something in the centre-back position. What is important is we get the right person,” Clement told the Derby Telegraph.

“He has to improve the quality, that is what it is about. It is not about a body, it is about getting improvement in quality in that position.”

A theme in Clement’s signings

All of the players Clement has signed on permanent deals for Derby this summer, all arguably improve the squad.

That’s significant considering the Rams will be looking for automatic promotion once the Championship action returns in under three weeks.

Another experienced defender to come in and give the backline an extra option is important and hopefully that player will also be able to cover different positions.

What will be interesting is if Clement looks to sign a player similar to Albentosa in the respect of being a big, tall and imposing centre back.

The alternative is to go for someone smaller, who maybe has a bit more about him in terms of pace and intelligence around the pitch.

If Clement gets the decision right, Derby will be an even more difficult side to break down.
