Barnsley defender Mason Holgate is currently on trial at Manchester United ahead of a proposed move.

According to the latest reports in The Sun, Newcastle United have made contact with Barnsley as they bid to hijack Manchester United’s move for highly rated defender Mason Holgate.

The 18-year-old has entered the final year of his contract with the Tykes, prompting the club to give him the green light to train with Manchester United ahead of a proposed move.

Holgate is a player in demand, with Aston Villa said to be interested via the Daily Mail and talk of a possible switch to Welsh outfit Swansea City, as reported previously by The Sun.

However, fresh reports now claim Newcastle have joined the race for his signature, with Steve McClaren’s side contacting the Yorkshire outfit about a potential deal.

"Barnsley defender Holgate, 18, has been training with the Reds Under-21s ahead of a possible £1 million move. But the Toon have contacted the Yorkshire club about a deal," The Sun report.

Who is Mason Holgate?

The Barnsley youngster is predominantly a right-back, though he is also capable of playing in the middle. Last season, he made 22 first-team appearances at Oakwell and impressed supporters.

Newcastle United’s new era:

As per the various reports, Holgate seemingly has a number of options to choose from, with the majority of his career widely expected to feature at Premier League level.

Newcastle have been regarded as a stale club in recent years, although McClaren’s appointment and talk of players such as Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic has given the club a real lift.

St James’ Park represents a good opportunity for Holgate, a club where he can grow and develop alongside a number of other young stars and under the tutelage of one of England's finest coaches.
