Anderlecht defender Chancel Mbemba could be closing in on a move to Newcastle.
According to the Daily Mail, Anderlecht defender Chancel Mbemba is set to join Newcastle having pulled out of a pre-season friendly against Lazio.
The Magpies have not only snapped up Georginio Wijnaldum, but are closing in on a move for Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, with manager Steve McClaren admitting to The Chronicle that a deal for the Serbian hitman is close to completion.
However, Newcastle could now complete a double swoop on the Belgian giants, with centre back Mbemba seemingly close to a move to to Tyneside.
Mbemba today asked to be left out of Anderlecht's squad to face Lazio in a pre-season friendly this afternoon, according to the Daily Mail, with a £7.5m move to St. James Park drawing ever closer.
The 20-year-old centre back, who has 16 caps for the DR Congo national team, could be set to follow Mitrovic to the North East, helping Newcastle strengthen last season's leaky defence.
What will Mbemba bring to Newcastle?
Mbemba may not be the biggest of defenders, standing at just 5ft 11in tall, but he makes up for that with his other athletic attributes.
The seemingly Newcastle-bound defender possesses great pace for a centre back, whilst also displaying enough strength to cope with bigger strikers.
At just 20, Mbemba has his best days ahead of him, and McClaren will hope to mould the defender into a star at St. James' Park, and his ability to play at right back could also be a factor in why Mbemba is such a prime target for the Magpies.
