The West Ham United player showed what he is capable of in a wonderful debut on Saturday.
Well, now it is official: After the Frenchman’s outstanding performance on his Hammers debut this weekend the club have a bona fide superstar on their hands.
Some fans may scream hyperbole, but the simple fact is Payet is a wonderful talent who can both score and create (as his two goals and one assist in a 3-2 victory against Southend United proved on Saturday).
The opposition may not have been of the highest calibre, and it may have been a warm-up for bigger things to come, but as far as debuts go it was a humdinger.
West Ham have been busy so far this summer bringing in a number of noteworthy additions, but the 28-year-old is undisputedly the pick of the bunch and it is going to be a joy watching him in the Premier League next season.
In his final year at Marseille Payet scored seven goals and provided an exceptional 21 assists and in his club career to date he has scored 64 goals and set up an additional 95.
Players are hailed here, there and everywhere with said praise often not justified, but the new West Ham player deserves all the plaudits that come his way.
He showed a tantalising glimpse of his talent this weekend, and next season should see him add plenty more goals and assists to his already impressive tally.
