Taking a closer look at two of Leeds United's summer signings.
Successful teams more often than not benefit from an effective front-two and Leeds United may have just got their hands on a striking duo that can fire them back into the top flight.
Last season, for all the strikers on Leeds’ books they did not score the amount of goals required to stake a claim for promotion…let alone ultimately achieve that goal.
Their top-scorer, Mirco Antenucci, rarely featured in the second half of the campaign while preferred front-man Steve Morison netted just twice all season.
Both players remain on the books at Elland Road, along with Souleymane Doukara and – for now at least – Billy Sharp but it is Erwin and Wood that are likely to start when the competitive action kicks off next month.
The two players showed glimpses of a promising partnership in the recent friendly against Harrogate, where the duo’s work ethic and ability on the ball shone through.
The two players compliment each other perfectly and it is telling that while Leeds manager Uwe Rosler opted to play Sharp, Doukara and Antenucci in Wednesday night’s friendly against Tadcaster it was Wood and Erwin who were chosen to play in the match he oversaw – against York City.
Unfortunately for Wood he was injured in the warm-up, but the simple fact is these two players are surely the pairing Rosler will rely on to fire Leeds back into the Premier League.
They were wonderful signings, both with talent aplenty and with enough still to prove to ensure they hit the ground running at Elland Road, and Leeds fans are surely in for a treat in the coming months.
