Leeds United took most of their first-team players on tour this weekend but the 23-year-old was not among them.
When Leeds United announced their 25-man travelling squad for their pre-season tour of Austria and Norway, there was one particularly notable absentee.
Nicky Ajose may have only played four games for Leeds to date, but he was still expected to get a chance to show what he can do under new manager Uwe Rosler.
However, the 23-year-old was omitted from the Whites’ summer tour and it remains to be seen what the future now holds for the player.
There is no confirmation yet as to the reason for Ajose’s absence, so he may have picked up an injury ruling him out of the tour. But if it is simply a decision from Rosler not to include him then that would speak volumes regarding his future at Elland Road.
Ajose suffered from being a Dave Hockaday signing, playing the first three Championship matches of last season before falling out of favour and ultimately heading to Crewe Alexandra on loan.
There he shone, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in 27 matches, and considering Rosler’s history of playing 4-3-3 there was a feeling that Ajose could get a chance out wide for Leeds next season.
He would have a long way to go to prove he could be a first-team regular, but to potentially call time on his Leeds career when it has barely begun would be a surprise move on the part of Rosler and owner Massimo Cellino.
If he is simply injured, there will still be opportunities to impress further down the road, but if he has been overlooked, it may well be that Leeds fan have already seen the last of him in their shirt.
