Report: Newcastle monitoring James Tomkins' West Ham situation

West Ham Championship

The Magpies have been linked with West Ham's 26-year-old centre-back.

Newcastle United are 'monitoring' James Tomkins' West Ham United situation, according to the Sunday People.

Indeed, with Steve McClaren's side looking to bolster their defence, Tomkins is said to be interesting the St James' Park outfit as they bid to add to the signing of Georginio Wijnaldum and the expected arrival of Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The People suggest Tomkins' West Ham place is under threat from the arrival of Angelo Ogbonna and that Newcastle will see what happens with regards to the defender's first-team situation.

Could a move happen?

As much as the report attempts to suggest Tomkins' exit is a possibility, any move would seem very unlikely at present.

Indeed, the West Ham defender captained the Hammers in the Europa League the other night and boss Slaven Bilic will want to have time to review the 26-year-old's form at the very least - even if he does sell.

Judging by the noise coming out of Upton Park lately, one would assume Tomkins will play alongside Ogbonna or at least challenge for that second place. So, if Newcastle are indeed hopeful, they may just be knocked firmly back by West Ham.
