Peterborough United chairman claims he would sign Dwight Gayle over Benteke

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony claims he would sign Dwight Gayle over Christian Benteke.

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has taken to Twitter to air his thoughts on Christian Benteke's reportedly imminent move to Liverpool.

According to BBC Sport, Liverpool are poised to meet the £32.5m release clause in Benteke's contract, allowing the Aston Villa star to make a big-money move to Anfield this summer.

The move is seen as a way for manager Brendan Rodgers to finally bag a stop striker having lost Luis Suarez last summer, but not everybody is such a big fan of the deal.

Peterborough chairman MacAnthony - self-professed Liverpool supporter - was asked whether he would rather have Benteke or former Posh striker Dwight Gayle...and his answer may have surprised a few.

Gayle, 25, was snapped up by Peterborough back in 2012, and smashed 13 goals in 29 games before earning a move to the Premier League with Crystal Palace.

The pacey forward has been in and out of the Palace side since his move, but with 18 goals in his two seasons in the top flight, Gayle arguably deserves more of a chance in Alan Pardew's side next season.

MacAnthony may be somewhat biased having helped unearth Gayle during the striker's time at Dagenham and Redbridge, but it just serves to show that not everybody is quite so impressed by Liverpool's move to sign Benteke this summer.
