Mario Suarez has been strongly linked with interest from Tottenham, but they could be about to miss out, unless they move swiftly.
Tottenham have been frequently linked with both players, per reports from TalkSport recently, but their defensive reinforcements of late would suggest a move for Stefan Savic is unlikely. Meanwhile, there is a need to bolster the midfield, meaning that Mario Suarez remains very much a key target.
In Spain it is believed Atletico Madrid are prepared to offer Mario Suarez plus cash for Stefan Savic, with the Montenegro defender regarded as an important target for manager Diego Simeone, following the departure of centre-back Joao Miranda to Inter Milan.
Interestingly it's also Inter Milan who were thought to be leading the chase for Mario Suarez, but Fiorentina have expressed the strongest interest from Italy over recent days, seducing the 28-year-old midfielder with guarantees he'll be a key player for them.
However, whilst Marca are convinced a deal is about to be struck between Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina, popular Italian transfer pundit Gianluca Di Marzio sees negotiations as anything but cut and dried. He has suggested negotiations remain ongoing, but are still at a very difficult stage and without resolution.
Manchester United are also said to be keen on Stefan Savic, who features amongst a lengthy list of central defensive targets they have in mind. Earlier this week, the Manchester Evening News referred to the 24-year-old as an alternative option, pending further developments over Sergio Ramos of Real Madrid, and Nicolas Otamendi of Valencia.
Certainly, there are numerous complications whichever direction you look, given the clubs involved on all fronts. But if Tottenham are to move for Mario Suarez, it appears the window of opportunity is closing and they must move swiftly now, or face missing out on an excellent midfielder at a bargain price of €8.5 million (just shy of £6.9m), per his reported release clause valuation.
Despite fierce competition for places in the Atletico Madrid midfield last season, Mario Suarez still made 35 appearances in all competitions, 24 of which were in the starting eleven. Although frequently operating in a deeper defensive role in the middle, he also contributed an impressive nine assists, demonstrating his creativity.
