Manchester United transfer news: Van Gaal's hints at surprise new striker; Otamendi and Pedro latest

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hinted that the club may sign a new striker in the coming weeks.

In comments published by the Daily Star, the Dutchman said, “We have Rooney, he can play in as a striker. We also have Chicharito and maybe (James) Wilson and maybe there comes a surprise.”

That comment is likely to have got United fans even more excited than they already were, following the arrivals of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian last week.

In other news, the Mirror claims United are plotting a £22million move for Barcelona player Pedro.

The Spaniard reportedly wants to play more regular football than he is currently getting at the Nou Camp, leading to the United link.

There is no doubt he would be a great signing but it remains to be seen if United will get their man.

And finally, the Independent claims alleged United target Nicolas Otamendi wants to push through a move from Spanish side Valencia before they return for pre-season training on July 27.

The Argentine international would be the perfect defensive reinforcement at Old Trafford but he will not come cheap, with his club allegedly holding out for his full £35million release-clause.
