Real Madrid's Karim Benzema would take Arsenal closer to Premier League title, says Harry Redknapp

The Gunners have been linked with a move for the Real Madrid forward, and Redknapp thinks he would be a game-changing acquisition.

Writing on Kicca, Harry Redknapp says Arsenal securing Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema would take them one step closer to challenging for the Premier League title.

The Gunners have long been linked with a move for the French striker, with the Daily Mirror among those to report on the latest rumours, with many believing that Arsene Wenger needs to add a star forward to his side in order to help them compete for the biggest prize in English football.

A move for Benzema would make sense, with his place at Madrid now under threat as new boss Rafa Benitez considers using Cristiano Ronaldo as his first choice centre forward.

And Redknapp says securing the forward’s signature would leave Arsenal one player away from launching a serious assault on the top-flight crown.

“If Arsenal were to land Karim Benzema, then they’d be one player from being capable of launching a serious title challenge," he wrote on Kicca.

“They signed Petr Cech earlier this summer and if they land Benzema, then for me that would leave them with either a defensive midfielder or central defender to get and you’d have to then look at them as a genuine title threat.”

Another central defender needed

The signing of Cech has been met with enthusiasm from all angles, with many believing the addition of the veteran goalkeeper solves one of Arsenal’s long-standing problems.

There are those that still think the Gunners are one or two players short of being a title-challenging team, though, with suggestions a defender, a defensive midfielder and a striker are needed.

And Redknapp says he would target another central defender given the side is already packed full of quality midfielders, while also suggesting that Benzema may be interested in a move to England.

“They’ve got a lot of quality in midfield, players you can play in a number of roles, so I’d probably go for a central defender,” he added.

“Will Benzema leave Real Madrid for Arsenal? Well, he’s won everything there is to win there and the lure of the Premier League is hard to resist. Also it’s in London and there are quite a few French connections at Arsenal, so you never know.”
