Derby County fans react on Twitter to Johnny Russell’s latest display

Derby County West Stand

Johnny Russell scored the only goal of the game as Derby County beat Northampton Town 1-0.

Derby County fans have taken to social networking site Twitter to praise forward Johnny Russell on his solid performance during the 1-0 victory over Northampton Town.

The Rams headed into their second pre-season friendly coming off the back of a 2-1 defeat at Grimsby Town - newly-appointed boss Paul Clement’s first game in charge of the club.

Whether or not Clement has his preferred starting XI in mind, the former Real Madrid coach named a strong starting line-up against the Cobblers, including summer signing Andreas Weimann.

With Darren Bent, Chris Martin and Tom Ince fellow attacking options, plenty of speculation has arisen regarding the future of Scottish international Johnny Russell.

The 25-year-old scored six and assisted a further eight Championship goals last season, but competition for places has seen the forward linked with a summer switch to Cardiff City, as per the Derby Telegraph.

Russell evidently has quality, but his inconsistent nature is a worry and the current pre-season campaign is arguably the most important of his career to date as he bids to establish himself as a first-team regular.

Capable of playing in any of the front three positions, the former Dundee United man followed up his goal at Grimsby with another strike at Sixfields, latching onto a superb Weimann pass to thump home.

His effort, work rate and unselfishness make him a firm favourite at the Ipro, and supporters were quick to acknowledge his efforts at Northampton by praising him heavily on social networking site Twitter.
