West Ham's summer signing Dimitri Payet stole the show for the Hammers as they beat Southend in an entertaining encounter this afternoon. The Frenchman, making his debut for Slaven Bilic's side, scored twice and provided an assist as the visitors won 3-2 at Roots Hall.
The former Marseille man announced himself by curling home a superb free-kick after 26 minutes, cancelling out a deflected Kevan Hurst strike that had given the League One side a surprise lead. He then added a second on the half hour mark to put the Hammers 2-1 ahead with a wonderful curling effort from the edge of the penalty area.
As if his goals were not enough, Payet then fashioned the chance that forced West Ham's eventual winner. After Southend's Jack Payne had drawn the hosts level, the £11million summer signing stepped up, firing in a cross that was ultimately turned into the Southend net by the unfortunate Luke Prosser.
This West Ham win may have turned into the Payet show, but fellow new boy Angelo Ogbonna - a recent arrival from Juventus - also impressed during his first appearance for the east Londoners. The Upton Park faithful will have been watching with intrigue as the club's new faces lived up to expectations - and then some, in Payet's case.
Here are a few snaps of the Hammers in action this afternoon.
