The 21-year-old French left-back has joined Villa from Ligue 1 side Nice on a five-year deal.
After seeing Manchester City lure away skipper Fabian Delph on Friday evening, Aston Villa fans were treated to some better transfer news 24 hours later when the club confirmed the long-awaited signing of French left-back Jordan Amavi from Nice.
The 21-year-old defender, who has penned a five-year deal at Villa Park, is reported to have cost around £10 million, per the likes of the Birmingham Mail, and arrives in the Midlands having forged a reputation as one of the top emerging talents in Ligue 1 last season.
After an impressive campaign, in which he scored four goals in 37 games, the France Under-21 international was linked with several top European clubs, including Arsenal and Atletico Madrid [h/t Daily Mail], but Villa managed to push through a deal following a fortnight of drawn-out negotiations.
With manager Tim Sherwood revamping the squad predecessor Paul Lambert left him in his first transfer window in charge, Amavi’s addition also fills a glaring hole on the left-hand side of defence.
Both Aly Cissokho and make-shift option Kieran Richardson largely flattered to deceive last season, while injuries also forced Alan Hutton, the since-departed Matthew Lowton and Charles N’Zogbia to deputise at the position at various points over the final months of the campaign.
It is no surprise then that the attack-minded speedster’s arrival has been well-received among Villa fans, who were quick to take to Twitter following news of his arrival to weigh in on Sherwood's latest piece of summer business.
Yes Jordan Amavi you total beast... One of the best upcoming Lb's in world football... Great snap up by Sherwood. #avfc— Jamie Bradley (@AVFCJamie_123) July 18, 2015
Signing Amavi shows other targets that we're looking to push on despite losing our 2 best players #AVFC— James Stokes (@Stokesey84) July 18, 2015
Let's not put too much pressure on Amavi. Still very young, not tested. Needs time to adapt. Cheer him good or bad. Confidence is key #avfc— convilla (@con_villa) July 18, 2015
Happy with the signing of Jordan Amavi, looks a decent young player. Our defence looks much better/solid this season #avfc— Ben Cox (@boredominberko) July 18, 2015
Only heard good things about Amavi, hopefully he'll prove to be worth the money and be at the club long-term! #avfc— RF (@ReganFrancis) July 18, 2015
