Newcastle United hero Steve Howey speaks highly of potential new signing Charlie Austin

Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin has been heavily linked with Newcastle United.

Newcastle United hero Steve Howey has told Sky Sports that Queens Park Rangers ace Charlie Austin would be a fantastic addition to Steve McClaren’s squad, citing his superb goalscoring record.

The 26-year-old striker was one of the standout players in the Premier League last season, netting 18 league goals in 25 starts despite QPR’s disappointing relegation.

Austin has since been linked with a host of top-flight clubs, with the latest reports in the Metro stating a move to the Magpies is close amid Sky Bet suspending the odds on a North East switch.

Talking to Sky Sports on his potential arrival, Newcastle hero Howey believes Austin and his proven goalscoring abilities would be a real coup for McClaren’s men.

"I think he would be an excellent signing. He’s a proven goalscorer in the Premier League. Even in a team that got relegated he scored goals," Howey explained.

"When you’ve got somebody like that, you could be not playing so well - away or at home - and all of a sudden he gets half a sniff in the box and it’s in the back of the net, and you end up getting three points."

Is Newcastle United the right place for Charlie Austin?

Newcastle haven't been the stablest of clubs in recent seasons, Alan Pardew leaving for Crystal Palace and an ensuing relegation battle mere proof of this.

However, McClaren’s appointment as boss could prompt a fresh start and their transfer targets so far this summer would suggest the club are looking to liven things up.

Georginio Wijnaldum has joined and, should Aleksandar Mitrovic or Austin join him, the Magpies will soon have an attacking trio with the potential to really grow at the club.
