Tottenham's Nabil Bentaleb has underlined the importance of fitness when it comes to competing in the English top-flight.
Amid Tottenham Hotspur's pre-season preparations, Bentaleb has revealed what he believes to be the key to success as a Premier League player - telling the club's official website that a top level of fitness is integral.
In what proved to be a breakthrough campaign in 2014/15, the Algeria international flourished in a central midfield partnership alongside Ryan Mason. In particular, the pair's high-energy performances caught the eye as the season progressed.
Speaking on the importance of fitness, he said on Spurs' official website: “When you get tired, especially later on in matches, you need to stay focused and your technical game still has to be as good as it was in the first minute.
“You make more mistakes when you are tired, perhaps you’ll lose a little focus and that’s what drives you to be as fit as you can be. You have to be switched on all the time in this league.
“That’s why pre-season work is so important and we’re all working as hard as we can to be as fit as we can. It’s been really good, tough as well, but we know that’s all part of pre-season.”
Bentaleb has recently signed a new contract at White Hart Lane, as covered by The Guardian, agreeing to a deal that extends his stay until with the north London club until 2020.
The 20-year-old was given his break in the first team by Tim Sherwood and has established himself further under Mauricio Pochettino, making 35 first team appearances last season and being called up to represent Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations.
He will be hoping to kick on again in 2015/16, and keeping himself fit and clear of the treatment table will unquestionably aid him in that quest.
