The former Aston Villa captain completed his £8 million switch to the Etihad on Friday.
Speaking on the Blues’ official website, Delph cited several factors that influenced his decision to move, one of which was Richards’ glowing reference for the club.
“…and Micah Richards told me that as far as he is concerned, this is the best club in the world and he had the time of his life here," he said.
Villa fans may not appreciate that admission, especially given the painful nature of the whole transfer saga.
City had activated his release clause last week and the completion of the move seemed a mere formality before the 25-year old rejected City’s advances.
Rumours surfaced that Richards had warned the England international against a City move, but the Villa new boy took to Twitter to deny those claims:
If people actually think I had a influence on Delph not going to city your wrong! And I have nothing but great things to say about city!— Micah Richards (@MicahRichards) July 13, 2015
Delph then committed his future to the Villans in a heartfelt statement, posted on the club's official website, just a few days ago, and there was no indication of the latest turn of events.
Reports of his presence in Manchester for a medical emerged today - much to the shock of both sets of supporters - and the role played by Villa’s summer signing Richards could be a difficult pill to swallow for the Villa faithful.
