Report: Everton reject £20 million Chelsea bid for John Stones

The England international is considered to be one of the most promising defenders in Europe.

Chelsea’s efforts to secure a long-term replacement for John Terry have hit a snag, with Sky Sports reporting that Everton have refused to entertain the Blues initial offer for the highly-rated defender.

Chelsea are believed to have offered £20 million for the 21-year old, but the substantial bid was unsurprisingly knocked back by the Toffees.

It looks set to be a summer on the defensive for Roberto Martinez, with his key stars – John Stones and James McCarthy – the target of Premier League rivals.

The Everton boss has been quick to deny the Irish midfielder will be leaving, as reported by Sky Sports, and he will likely reaffirm his intention to keep hold of Stones in the coming days.

Chelsea’s admiration of the young centre-back is well known and with Terry turning 35 next season, Stones is viewed as the perfect player to replace the Blues stalwart.

Jose Mourinho has only managed to recruit Radamel Falcao this summer, but given the health of his squad, there isn’t a great deal that needs to be added.

One area which could do with a slight bolstering is central defence however, and Everton will be bracing themselves for another Chelsea call in the near future.
