Sylla was out on loan last season when Sherwood took charge of Villa, and he has told GFFN that he did not speak to the manager this summer prior to his departure.
The Malian international said: “I’m going to be frank: I didn’t receive any news from him. When I returned, I felt that I was not part of the manager’s plans. I did not have the chance to have a discussion about my future with him.”
Sylla signed for Ligue 1 side Rennes, and it is clear that Sherwood did not have plans to utilise him this coming campaign.
A midfielder, he was unfortunate to have spent time away from the club when Sherwood arrived, as he had no chance to impress the head coach last season.
Sherwood would have formed opinions on his playing squad without ever seeing Sylla play, and did not once make an attempt to contact the 24-year-old concerning his future at the club.
Instead of bringing Sylla back into the first-team fold, Sherwood preferred to utilise the transfer market - signing Idrissa Gueye - and has allowed the midfielder to depart Villa Park.
His loss will not be heavily felt at the club, but it seems strange that Sherwood would not have attempted to involve him in pre-season before deciding his future.
