Report: Florentin Pogba to snub Aston Villa, Newcastle interest and sign new St Etienne deal

Aston Villa and Newcastle United have been linked with St Etienne’s Florentin Pogba.

According to the latest reports from the French publication Le10sport, St Etienne defender Florentin Pogba is set snub interest from abroad and sign a new deal at the club.

The Guinean international and older brother of Juventus superstar Paul Pogba is one of the club’s most underrated players, making just 12 starts in the league last season.

Despite his lack of game-time, Le10sport credit Sevilla, Stuttgart, Aston Villa and Newcastle United with holding an interest in the centre-back as he enters the final year of his existing contract.

However, amid reported interest from the Premier League and La Liga, fresh reports claim Pogba wants to continue his development with the ASSE, and a two-year extension is close to being agreed.

“The deal is almost complete and it would take an unlikely turn of events for Pogba not to extend his contract with AS Saint-Etienne. He has attracted several good European clubs, including Aston Villa, Newcastle and Stuttgart. Sevilla were also interested,” Le10sport states.

What are Aston Villa and Newcastle United likely to miss out on?

Standing at 6ft 2inch, Florentin Pogba is a physically strong centre-back and has a bright future ahead of him, whether that be in France or potentially in the Premier League.

The 24-year-old made five Europa League appearances last season, averaging an impressive 2.2 tackles, two interceptions and 7.6 effective clearances per encounter.

Both Villa and Newcastle are short of options at the back, the latter especially as boss Steve McClaren is yet to strengthen a fragile area within the Magpies’ squad.
