Newcastle United round-up: Betting stopped on Charlie Austin's arrival, Thauvin staying at Marseille

A round-up of the latest news at St James's Park, with the club pursuing further signings in the form of the QPR forward, as well as two Anderlecht players.

There were reports that Newcastle were edging closer to their second signing of the window on Thursday evening, as SkyBet suspended betting on the Magpies signing Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin.

With odds crashing to 1/10 before betting stopped, things were certainly looking encouraging for the Magpies regarding their striker chase, if the direction of money was to be believed, though the Mirror stated that various Premier League rivals were looking to hijack the deal.

Another linked player, Florient Thauvin looks less likely to be heading to St James's Park, after he told the Ligue 1 website that he was eager to stay at Marseille for at least one more season.

"Coming to OM was really what I wanted," he is quoted as saying on the website. "I can't allow myself to leave the club by the back door. I want to succeed at OM and that means playing here for at least one more season."

While Steve McClaren is also keeping his fingers on the drawn out pursuit of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Dutch media outlet HLN are also saying he is considering an approach for the Serbian striker's teammate, 20-year-old centre-back and Congolese international Chancel Mbemba.

In other news, Georginio Wijnaldum has arrived in California and will resume training with his new teammates ahead of the club's next pre-season friendly against Sacramento Timbers, according to the Chronicle.
