Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Valdes' Manchester United axe

What have Liverpool fans had to say about Manchester United's plans to axe Victor Valdes?

Victor Valdes' career at Manchester United is over before it has barely begun.

Manager Louis van Gaal discussed the goalkeeper's absence from the club's US tour at a press conference, and nailed the Spaniard, surely ending any chance he will play for the club again.

The Dutchman is angry due to what he perceives as a poor attitude, telling The BBC: "He doesn't follow my philosophy. There is no place for someone like that.

"Last year, he refused to play in the second team and there are other aspects you need as a keeper at United. When you are not willing to follow those principles, there is only one way and that is out.

"It is a big disappointment. It is a pity because we have given him the opportunity to rehabilitate, gave him a contract and then he is fit to play."

United believed they had pulled off a major coup in signing Valdes as a free agent in January, with the ex-Barcelona goalkeeper recovering from a serious knee injury.

Valdes was strongly linked with rivals Liverpool beforehand, where he would have stood a better chance of dislodging Simon Mignolet than David de Gea at United. The Metro reported in October, based on information which proved to false, that Valdes was even having a medical with Liverpool ahead of a transfer.

The goalkeeper played only two first team games for United, with just one start, conceding in both.

He had been seen as an insurance policy if David de Gea leaves, but Louis van Gaal is sticking to his guns, with plenty of work to do in the market if Real Madrid do get their man.

The reaction from Liverpool fans to the United boss' comments was fascinating, with many calling on the club to try to sign the ex-Barcelona man, seeing him as an alternative to Mignolet, and an upgrade on new back-up Adam Bogdan.
