The BBC pundit has responded to reports that the Aston Villa forward could be headed to Anfield.
Indeed, news emerged on Thursday afternoon that Liverpool are ready to pay £32.5 million to secure the striker's services, according to the BBC among others.
And former striker Hartson immediately thought of Brendan Rodgers' decision to sell Carroll all those years ago because he didn't fit in with the Liverpool boss's 'philosophy.'
Hartson did, however, identify a key difference between the Villa man and Carroll, something he feels could be on the forefront of the Reds manager's mind.
Didn't Brendan Rodgers get rid of Andy Carroll because his Philosophy is to keep the ball on the deck! Benteke loves crosses!!Also can play.— John Hartson (@JohnHartson10) July 16, 2015
That's if Liverpool get Benteke.. If they do may just be a case of Brendan thinks Benteke has much more to his game than Carroll.— John Hartson (@JohnHartson10) July 16, 2015
The BBC pundit concluded by suggesting the 24-year-old would be a 'great signing' for the Reds and that Liverpool will be much stronger with the Belgian in their ranks.
Personally I think it would be a great signing. Benteke gets goals.strong, quick, can hold it up. With him Liverpool much stronger.— John Hartson (@JohnHartson10) July 16, 2015
Hartson's overall view is a divisive one, as opinions differ to great extents on whether the Aston Villa striker will succeed at Liverpool.
Some see him as a square peg in a round hole, while others - like Hartson - feel there is a distinct difference between Benteke and Carroll, among other traditional target men.
