The son of West Ham United co-owner David Sullivan has suggested that one area of the team is going to be vital in the coming season.
Sullivan has also suggested where manager Slaven Bilic will be looking for his midfield to excel in the imminent campaign, as the club look to progress and move forward over the next ten to eleven months.
“I feel the arrival of our summer signings has provided real competition for places and is bringing out the best in all the midfielders,” he told whufc.com.
“We want our midfielders to score more and chip in with their fair share this season to take the pressure off the forwards.”
Challenging each other
Bilic will be delighted to see players challenging each other in West Ham’s midfield because it forces them to up their game slightly.
If the boss can see a situation where the players are putting in that little bit extra to ensure that they have an edge over each other, he’ll be happy because that intensity is going to refine the quality running throughout the side.
He’s also got different options and will want his players to further increase those options, giving him positive problems to mull over in terms of team selection.
Midfielders getting forward
It’s still a little unclear as to what sort of system Bilic is going to be looking to use in the Premier League when it starts in a few weeks.
If he goes with one man up front, Sullivan’s desire for the midfielders in the team to get forward more frequently is a justified one.
However, it’s about the team working together and the striker creating the extra space for the midfielders to run into by pushing back the opposition defence.
