Adam Lallana believes that Liverpool can achieve 'something special' in the coming season as they look to put a poor 2014/15 campaign, which had a nightmare end to it, behind them.
Lallana did not have the smoothest start to his Liverpool career last term, finding himself in and out of the side due to the odd injury niggle that prevented him from finding the kind of consistency he would have liked.
He told reporters, with the Liverpool Echo among them, in Brisbane: "We hope to improve on last season, personally and as a team. I picked up a lot of injuries last season, hence why I am concentrating on getting strong and extra fit this pre season.
"I've seen already that we are gelling, and there is a good core. We've got the recipe to achieve something special this season."
The Reds' first pre-season game against a Thailand XI showed some promising signs, as they ran out comfortable 4-0 winners, but the usual caveats apply, especially when it comes to the quality of the opposition.
But Brendan Rodgers seems pretty set on operating with a diamond midfield, which looked particularly effective in the second half, with James Milner and Jordan Henderson operating on either side of it.
Milner in particular seems to be a signing that pleases Lallana, with the England international midfielder arriving on a free transfer from Manchester City this summer.
He said: "He's a great pro. For us to sign him shows massive intent from the club. He's won the Premier League, has over 50 caps for England."
His two Premier League titles, and being part of a side with the mentality of being capable of repeating that success, could prove to be valuable when it comes to passing on that experience to other squad members, but also shows that Liverpool can attract good players even when they are not in the Champions League.
It is a crucial season ahead for Liverpool and they need to show they can turn their fortunes around from last season and bounce back. What Lallana means by 'something special' remains to be seen - but one feels that has to include silverware.
