Could Leeds United be about to bring a Brazilian to Elland Road for the second consecutive summer?
According to a recent report form the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United are interested in signing Brazilian winger Raphael Martinho this summer, so what would the 27-year-old’s arrival mean for some of the club’s current players?
The YEP report claims Leeds are now targeting a new left winger, with Martinho on owner Massimo Cellino’s wanted list, and while more width is certainly needed in the squad, the Brazilian’s signing would impact three players in particular.
Leeds defender Charlie Taylor started the season in the under-21s but after Stephen Warnock’s departure the youngster became first-choice left-back…at least for a while.
Later on that season manager Neil Redfearn switched Taylor to the wing, just as he had on the opposite flank with Sam Byram, and the move worked wonders.
However, if an out-and-out winger is being targeted the likelihood is that Taylor will revert to left-back next season.
Which begs the question: what next Gaetano Berardi? The Swiss defender is predominantly a right-back but he impressed on the opposite side when Taylor was pushed forward.
But if Martinho arrives and Taylor reverts to his more natural position Berardi suddenly has a battle on his hands for a starting spot, not just with Taylor but with the likes of Scott Wootton, Sam Byram and Lewie Coyle at right-back.
Nicky Ajose has only featured four times for Leeds but that does not mean his time there is over.
The 23-year-old shone on loan at Crewe Alexandra last season and that form could see him given a second chance at Elland Road.
If he is, a place up front is unlikely given the presence of Chris Wood, Lee Erwin and Mirco Antenucci, but having played on the left wing at the start of last season he may have been hoping for more chances there. However, that would be far less likely if Martinho or another such winger arrived.
