Steve McClaren is happy with his Newcastle squad, even though only one player has been signed.
Speaking to the Chronicle, Steve McClaren has admitted that he is ‘very pleased’ with the state of Newcastle’s squad, although he is confident that deals are still close to being completed.
He said: “The plans continue and work goes on behind the scenes back home. We’re close. With recruitment we will wait and see. But from what I have seen in the last two weeks I have been very pleased with the boys.”
This is a surprising view to take of Newcastle’s squad, considering the lack of strengthening that has been done since the end of last season.
Although badly hit by injuries and bad management last term, this group of players only secured top flight survival on the last day of the season, yet McClaren has been pleased with their abilities.
Georginio Wijnaldum has been one recruit brought to the club this summer, and he is an impressive signing for the Magpies, but he will not be the player to fix all their issues.
The Tyneside club need to bring in a host of defenders this summer, as well as another consistent goalscoring striker, and add depth all over the pitch.
There are still three weeks to go before the Premier League season begins, leaving plenty of time for McClaren to improve his squad. But if he believes his current selection of players are good enough, then the Tyneside outfit may be in serious trouble this coming campaign.
