Newcastle are reportedly interested in signing Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega.
The Magpies are pressing ahead with plans to strengthen their squad this summer, and snapping up PSV Eindhoven midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum last weekend was a real coup.
Now, reports from TMW suggest that Newcastle have targeted another midfielder, with Sevilla's Argentine international Banega on the radar.
Banega, 27, is fresh off a Copa America campaign with Argentina which ended in a final defeat to Chile, and it appears that McClaren has been suitably impressed with his displays, to the point where Newcastle have asked about signing the playmaker.
However, Sevilla allegedly want a fee of €13m (£9.15m) for Banega, with Newcastle already offering a proposal to the midfielder, worth around £40,000-a-week.
Whether Newcastle are willing to meet that asking price remains to be seen, but the Magpies are gathering pace in the transfer market having landed Wijnaldum.
What would Banega offer Newcastle?
Banega is a gifted midfielder with great technical ability, as well as a superb range of passing, which contributed to his success not only with Sevilla, but also with Valencia before that.
Banega won't win any plaudits for his athletic ability, possessing very little speed or strength, with his game mostly predicating on being a deep-lying playmaker.
That would allow the likes of Wijnaldum and Jack Colback to do the running around him - if Newcastle can seal a deal for the midfielder this summer.
