A round-up of the latest news at St James's Park, with the club pursuing further signings.
Steve McClaren, speaking after Newcastle United's loss to Club Atlas in the US last night, has made it clear that there are more signings in the offing, telling the Chronicle: “The plans continue and work goes on behind the scenes back home. We’re close."
The Chronicle go on to state that the Magpies remain positive that one of these plans is related to the prospect of finally snapping up Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, despite no further concrete news regarding the Serbian international.
The club are still eager to strengthen the midfield, according to Italian site Tutto Mercato Web, by chasing Argentina and Sevilla star Ever Banega, a player who has been runner-up in both the World Cup and Copa America in the last 12 months.
The 27-year-old is available for a fee of €13m (£9.15m) according to the TMW report, a superb price for a player with 34 caps for his country.
Reading midfielder Garath McCleary is also interesting Steve McClaren say ESPN, with the Jamaican impressing in his country's Gold Cup campaign this summer, as well as the Copa America. Newcastle have company in the chase for the winger though, with the report stating that West Brom, Watford and Bournemouth are all keeping track of the 28-year-old.
