Former Arsenal striker and current Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith has been quoted by the Premier League’s official website, suggesting that Roberto Martinez can get the best out of Tom Cleverley at Everton.
Cleverley joined the Toffees after a decent season on loan with Aston Villa and Smith has praised the way that Villa boss Tim Sherwood got the very best out of the midfielder, unfortunately missing out on the chance to sign him permanently.
Smith has now challenged Cleverley to make the most of his hunger and desire to improve, as he looks to become one of the first choice players for Everton in a very competitive area of their squad.
“I saw him for Aston Villa. He had a tough time under Paul Lambert and then suddenly had a new lease of life under Tim Sherwood. He became the player that we saw in his earlier days for Manchester United,” Smith is quoted by premierleague.com.
“You can see why he has gone to Everton. I think it will be a good signing for them and Martinez can bring the best out of him - He's a lad who should have a lot of hunger to improve and really make a career for himself at the top level.”
What’s the best way for Martinez to use Cleverley?
Cleverley firstly needs to try and improve his position in the pecking order, which he can do with a solid pre-season under his belt.
If he can prove his fitness and excel as the players are vigorously tested, he will put himself firmly in the front of Martinez’s mind.
In terms of the best way to use him, Martinez will most likely urge him to sit in midfield, controlling games and then exploiting space when he gets the chance to go forward, as he did with Aston Villa towards the end of last season.
