The Croatia international’s future at Inter has been heavily speculated on this summer, with a number of reports linking him with a move to the Premier League with Liverpool.
According to a report from Sky Sports, the Reds were said to have agreed a fee for the talented midfielder, whereas TMW state that Liverpool representatives watched him during a recent Euro 2016 qualifying encounter.
However, following the signing of Roberto Firmino, talks over a potential Anfield move have quietened and fresh reports from Italy claim a transfer to Germany could be on the cards instead.
“Mateo Kovacic’s entourage are in talks with an emissary from Bayer Leverkusen, the Croatian midfielder’s future is in the balance despite good words from his coach Roberto Mancini,” the report says.
Should Liverpool revive their interest in Mateo Kovacic?
The 21-year-old is a wonderful talent, and arguably a player the Reds still lack in midfield despite the signings of Roberto Firmino and James Milner, who are expected to operate in the middle.
The likes of Lucas Leiva, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson add steel and shape, yet none can be classed as a deep-lying playmaker able to find the gaps between the lines and create chances.
Kovacic is one of Europe’s leading talents, and considering the club’s current position, the type of player they should be looking to bring in as they aim to build a title-winning team.
