According to the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa are edging closer to a deal for Nice left back Jordan Amavi, with a fee agreed.
Having already snapped up Scott Sinclair, Micah Richards, Mark Bunn and Idrissa Gueye this summer, Villa now look set to splash the cash again and land a fifth summer signing in Amavi.
Amavi, 21, joined Nice as a teenager and has made his way up through the ranks with the Ligue 1 outfit, becoming a first team regular under Claude Puel.
A French Under-21 international, Amavi enjoyed a superb season last term, and now looks set to be rewarded for those displays with a move to the Premier League.
The Birmingham Mail report that Villa have had a £9m bid for Amavi accepted, and the player will now enter contract negotiations with Villa in the coming days.
It's also stated that Amavi isn't 100% sure that a move to Villa is best for him at this stage of his career, but also that Villa and Sherwood remain confident of completing the deal this week.
Sherwood could now field a back four consisting of Micah Richards, Jores Okore, Ciaran Clark and Amavi - even if Richards may prefer to play at centre back.
With Amavi adding more pace to the backline, Sherwood may have one of the most athletic defences in the Premier League at his disposal, with both Richards and Okore offering pace and power.
Each of those defenders have room to grow under Sherwood, giving Villa not only a strong backline immediately, but also in the future.
