Newcastle are still attempting to close a deal for Aleksandar Mitrovic.
According to a report in the Mirror, Newcastle have yet to confirm the signing of MItrovic as he delays the deal, with Porto still interested in his signature.
Although the Magpies lead the race for the Serbian striker, 20, Porto can offer Mitrovic European football next term - and likely for every season in the immediate future - whilst Newcastle cannot.
The forward wants to be turning out in Europe, as he will be leaving Anderlecht - who themselves have European football - and Newcastle’s offer is lacking in that key factor.
However, they do hold a trump card over many of their European rivals, as the Magpies can provide Mitrovic with a much larger financial packet than many other clubs. Thanks to the riches of the Premier League, the Tyneside outfit can look to bring him to England by offering him the kind of money he will not get elsewhere.
A deal for Mitrovic looked set to be completed over the weekend, with the report stating that a £12 million fee has already been accepted by Anderlecht. However, the move did not come about due to Mitrovic delaying the deal, and it now hangs in the balance.
The move is still on the table, and Mitrovic has not ruled out signing for the Magpies this summer, but Newcastle boss Steve McClaren wants a swift conclusion in his attempt to bring the talented forward to St James’ Park.
