Possible Newcastle XI for their Premier League opener against Southampton

A speculative look at how the Magpies could line up on August 9th…

Newcastle United’s summer recruitment drive kicked off in style last week with the announcement of Georginio Wijnaldum joining in a £14.5 million deal, as reported by the BBC, and plenty more besides have been rumoured to be on the club's radar.

In defence, Ajax’s Joel Veltman has been linked with a switch to Tyneside, by the likes of the Independent, and would prove a classy, ball-playing addition to the back line.

He would likely partner club captain Fabricio Coloccini, while Tim Krul, Daryl Janmaat and Massadio Haidara make up the rest of the rearguard.

Further up the pitch, Andros Townsend is thought to have caught the eye of Steve McClaren, according to the Daily Star, and would provide real pace and directness on Newcastle’s right flank.

Valued at around £15 million, any deal is a long way off but his signing would allow Moussa Sissoko to return to a central midfield role.

The Frenchman would combine with Jack Colback and new boy Wijnaldum in a combative and athletic, but technical midfield three.

Frenchman Remy Cabella retains his place on the left flank and has shown enough glimpses of what he is capable of to have fans hopeful his second season at St James’ can be a more fruitful one.

Who takes the striker's spot is the great unknown, with Charlie Austin and Aleksandar Mitrovic the strongest linked.

The Serbian looks closer to a move despite reports that he is stalling, via the likes of the Mirror, and should add guaranteed goals to the Newcastle attack.

Newcastle's potential XI:

Cabella                                           Townsend

Wijnaldum           Sissoko

Haidara     Coloccini    Veltman   Janmaat
