The 33-year-old lined up with the Senegal midfielder on multiple occasions when he played on loan at Lille during the 2011-12 season.
Having played with Aston Villa new boy Idrissa Gueye during his time at Lille, Joe Cole has told the club’s official website that the Senegal midfielder will prove “a wonderful addition” to the squad.
Gueye, 25, joined Villa from the French club last week on a four-year deal, with manager Tim Sherwood spending a reported £9 million to make him his third new summer signing after the recent additions of Micah Richards and goalkeeper Mark Bunn.
The 24-times capped international arrives in the Midlands after forging a reputation as one of top emerging talents in Ligue 1, having made 176 total appearances for Lille since earning his first-team debut in 2010.
His impressive performances last season, when he recorded three goals and four assists in 44 games, saw him linked with the likes of Southampton and Marseille earlier this summer [h/t Daily Mail] but Cole is delighted that Villa managed to push through a deal.
The former Chelsea man lined up alongside his fellow midfielder when he spent the 2011-12 season on loan at Lille from Liverpool and he believes that the claret and blues have a special talent on their hands.
“Idrissa Gueye has come in from my old club Lille - and I think he will be a wonderful addition to our squad for the new season,” Cole told avfc.co.uk. “He's a really good player. I played with him in France.
“You knew he'd develop into a top player. We're getting him at the age of 25 and he's coming into the prime of his career. It's a good move for the club.
“He will fit into the way we play. He will be excited about coming here and playing in the Premier League. I have been texting him. I don't think it will take him that long to settle in here either.
“He has all the physical attributes to play in the Premier League,” Cole added. “Playing-wise, he is similar to Fabian [Delph]. He has good energy. He's a good footballer. He can get forward and get back.
“He's a good lad too. He has a solid personality. He wants to do well and he wants to win. The fans will like him.”
With Manchester City coming close to luring away Fabian Delph last week, Gueye was originally thought to have been earmarked as the Villa skipper’s replacement before his sensational U-turn to reject a move to the Etihad Stadium.
Instead, Delph and his new teammate will now form part of a strong midfield group, which also includes Ashley Westwood, Carlos Sanchez and the promising Gary Gardner, giving Sherwood plenty of options in the centre of the park for the coming campaign.
