At least one Spanish stopper will seemingly be at Manchester United next season.
The former Barcelona ‘keeper has been linked with a summer move to Turkish side Antalyaspor but Gines Carvajal told AS, “His thoughts are to continue as a Manchester United player. He has one year left on his contract with the club.
“We see no good reason to leave; United are one of the three or four best clubs in the world. Victor is excited about having a place in the team next season and is ready to give his best to help his team.”
So there you have it: An emphatic statement of intent from the representative of a player who could still have a vital role to play at Old Trafford if his countryman David de Gea leaves for Real Madrid.
All the time the younger Spaniard remains at United, Valdes will be no more than a back-up, but if De Gea does move on, it will be interesting to see how United manager Louis van Gaal deals with things.
In Valdes he has one of the most experienced stoppers in Europe but having been blighted by injury in the recent past – and subsequently playing little football in the last year – it would be a risk to suddenly rely on him as a first-choice.
In truth even if De Gea does leave United the club are likely to bring in a replacement, but Valdes could still play a part now the club are back in the Champions League and with four competitions to go for next season.
