The 25-year-old Senegal international has been likened to Chelsea's Brazilian midfielder due to his versatility and athleticism.
Gueye, 25, agreed to join Villa last week on a four-year deal from French club Lille for around £9 million, becoming Sherwood’s third new summer signing after the recent additions of Micah Richards and goalkeeper Mark Bunn.
The Senegal international arrives in the Midlands have forged a reputation has one of the top emerging talents in Ligue 1 and, with scouting reports comparing him to the versatile Ramires, the Villa boss is confident he will prove a top addition.
"He's similar,” said Sherwood. “Ramires can play flexible as well - as a No.6 in a sitting midfield role or as a No.8 box to box – Idrissa can do both of them.
"He wants to get the shackles off really and get box to box. That's what he's looking to do and we're happy for him to do that.
"He’s good acquisition to the squad. He’s got the same energy as Fabian Delph, which everyone will be pleased to hear."
With Manchester City coming close to snapping up Fabian Delph last week, Gueye was originally thought to have been earmarked as the Villa skipper’s replacement before his sensational U-turn to reject a move to the Etihad Stadium.
The 24-times capped Senegalese is also reported to have had offers from Southampton and Marseille this summer [h/t Daily Mail], following an impression 2014-15 season in which he recorded three goals and four assists in 44 games for Lille and shone at the African Cup of Nations.
The pair will now have the chance to line-up alongside one another at Villa Park, though, and Sherwood is expecting them to run opposing teams off the park with their tireless work rate.
He added: “If you can get two players in there who run around as much as them, I think the groundsman is going to have a problem keeping that grass on the pitch!
"He [Gueye] wanted to come to the Premier League. He had a few options but we were delighted he decided to join us."
Certainly, Delph and Gueye look like a formidably strong midfield partnership on paper and, with Ashley Westwood, Carlos Sanchez and the promising Gary Gardner also at his disposal, Sherwood will not be short of options in the centre of the park going into this coming season.
