Middlesbrough agree Christian Stuani deal, want to close Stewart Downing move

Middlesbrough have agreed a deal with Espanyol to sign Uruguay striker Christian Stuani, HITC Sport understands.

Middlesbrough are set to welcome Christian Stuani to the squad for the 2015-16 campaign.

The 28-year-old has just featured in the Copa America and is expected on Teesside later this month following his summer holiday to complete a deal which will cost Boro around £2.5 million.

Boro will hope to unveil Stuani later this month when they would also like to have Stewart Downing's capture finalised.

A source close to the club told HITC Sport: "The club are working on a number of deals, Stuani included, but Downing remains the priority and they hope to see that move on this week."

The deal which has long been agreed in principle has been delayed at the West Ham end, but they are likley to finalise the loan signing Manuel Lanzini this week which should finally see Downing given the green light to finalise his return to the club he began his career with.

HITC Sport understands that Boro are alao very much still in the market for Blackburn's Jordan Rhodes and have been talking again about a deal for the Scottish international in the last week.

Boro tried to sign Rhodes, whose uncle Steve Agnew is an assistant at the Riverside, towards the end of last season - so they already know and are willing to meet the player's demands - but they just need to try and strike a deal with Rovers, who had been looking for a fee in excess of £10 million.
