Morgan Schneiderlin has completed his move to Manchester United, and Southampton director of football Les Reed has admitted to the official club website that plans to replace him are well underway - with many expecting Jordy Clasie will sign for the club.
Reed said: “Morgan’s departure is one that the club has had to be fully prepared for, and we are well under way with our plans to strengthen our midfield – both with players emerging from our academy and from outside the club.”
Although referencing players from inside the academy system - with Harrison Reed considered a likely replacement - it is a summer signing who is sure to be first-choice starter for the defensive midfielder position.
Feyenoord captain and Dutch international Clasie has long been a transfer target for the Saints, as per the Mirror, who also claim that Newcastle are interested in him. Aston Villa have been linked with Clasie, as per the Telegraph, whilst SoccerNews reported that Sunderland had been tracking him.
The 24-year-old is clearly in demand, and due to all the interest a move is expected this summer. He was pulled out of Feyenoord’s friendly squad on Sunday amid all the rumours, and Reed’s comments suggest that a deal to bring Clasie to the Premier League is close.
He would be an exceptional signing for the Saints, and a fantastic replacement for Schneiderlin, and it should not be too long before Clasie is turning out at St Mary’s Stadium.
